Ki Churl Chang
Professor
Department of Pharmacology
School of Medicine
Gyeongsang National University
South Korea
I am currently engaged primarily in research activity. My overall research interest is focused on molecular mechanisms of gene regulation and function with particular relevance to stress-inducible systems such as heme oxygenase-1. I also currently study molecular mechanisms of metabolic disorders, with a focus area on high fat-diet induced liver injury and diabetes mellitus. My research also examines molecular adaptation to environmental stress, involving inflammatory, autophagic, and apoptotic mechanisms, as well as therapeutic effects of inhaled carbon monoxide. On a daily basis, I participate in the management, mentorship and training of a large group of research fellows and students. These responsibilities include providing daily consultation on postdoctoral and fellow research activities in informal (laboratory) or organized individual or group meeting sessions, evaluating and analyzing data, and assisting in experimental design and manuscript planning. I have provided leadership in all aspects of manuscript preparation, production, and peer-review processes for my daily working group. I also participate in fellow teaching and training, by giving instructional seminars at lab meetings, and previously by giving interactive demonstrations in a formal molecular biology course for clinical fellows.

Patrick A Howson
Head of Chemical Services
Atuka Inc.
UK
Patrick is CEO and co-founder of Junaxo Inc., a virtual drug development company. Patrick is also Head of Chemical Services at Atuka Inc., a CRO specializing in Parkinson's disease. In addition to these roles Patrick also has an academic position within the University Health Network at the Toronto Western Research Institute.Patrick has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, from the University of Bristol, UK (1999) and subsequently worked in an academic Medicinal Chemistry group. Prior to his current positions, Patrick was Head of Preclinical Sciences at Phytopharm plc, a UK based pharmaceutical company, and he has over 10 years' experience of working in drug discovery and development. Dr Howson has been involved in managing projects from early pre-clinical evaluation through to Phase II clinical studies, including clinical studies in Parkinson's disease. Dr Howson also has experience in the generation and management of intellectual property and is an inventor on several patents.
My main research interest is the development of small molecule therapeutics for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. By using the 'virtual' model of drug discovery and development I have been involved in the preclinical and clinical evaluation of several compounds for Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. Currently, I am interested in the potential of novel sapogenins to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In addition, I am also researching compounds that have the potential to enhance autophagy and thus may be of therapeutic benefit in several neurodegenerative disorders.
